Dr. Dougherty is originally from the San Fernando Valley, and feels a great connection with the Sherman Oaks community where he has lived and worked for over 28 years. He enjoys being a part of all that the community has to offer, especially the beautiful, warm, California smiles that are shared throughout the valley. Dr. Dougherty looks forward to working with each of his patients, and enjoys helping his patients create one-of-a-kind treatment experiences.

Education and Continuing Education

Dr. Dougherty received his degree and certification in orthodontics from the University of Southern California. He began his career in orthodontics in Santa Monica, and wanting to be more involved in his community, moved his practice to Sherman Oaks.

Dr. Dougherty has practiced in Sherman Oaks for the past 23 years.  He lives in Sherman Oaks with his wife Pam.  Their son Ryan is currently in his third year at the University of Oregon studying sports business.  Dr. Dougherty's hobbies include cycling and photography. 

In addition to excellence in clinical practice in his office Dr. Dougherty is involved in orthodontics at many levels. He currently teaches courses in Diagnosis and Treatment planning, and computer assisted facial analysis as well as one of the Faculty advisors at the bi monthly USC orthognathic surgical conferences.  He has taught at Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC for over 10 years and recently (May 2014) received an award for excellence in teaching for part time faculty.  Dr. Dougherty has also taught surgical orthodontics and basic mechanics at UCLA (2004-2010) and is a regular speaker at local and national orthodontic meetings. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, and a regular member of the Edward H. Angle Society, Southern California Component. He is currently serving on the Board of the Southern California component of the Edward H. Angle Society.  In the past he has served on the Board of the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontics, and the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation (an organization that raises money to fund research in orthodontics and support orthodontic education).

His research interests involve computer diagnosis, CAD-CAM orthodontic appliance design.  His most recent publication in this area was in the AJO-DO in April of 2014.

Outside of the office...

Dr. Dougherty and his wife, Pam, have been married for over 28 years and have a 21-year-old son named Ryan. When he’s away from the practice, Dr. Dougherty enjoys photography and working with computers. He is an avid walker and cyclist, and is a member of the Los Angeles Bicycle Coalition. He rides with the San Fernando Valley Bicycle club and the Los Angeles Wheelmen. Dr. Dougherty has even been known to commute to work on his bicycle!
